Why do a course?

The interdisciplinary team of the psychosomatic unit at the University Children’s hospital of Graz has been engaged in scientific and academic exchange with the goal of increasing the understanding and knowledge about disorders of primarily non-medical origin in the age group 0-3. We are convinced that any support offered to parents and caregivers can only be of substantial value for any child if the child itself is put into the centre of interest. Interactive and psychosocial variables may also influence the child in many areas and must be considered in the diagnostic assessment, but the child and its observable individual presenting symptoms must be at the core focus of any plan of intervention. This approach might mean that a non directive path is chosen in some cases. Other settings need clear recommendations to empower parents to handle a given situation with new perspectives. In many cases - with the best intention - too much is done with too much emphasis and too high expectations. This can achieve the opposite effect and the child might pull back.

These topics and many more are presented and discussed in an interdisciplinary forum. As any journey to a new culture opens ones mind and perception with new insight, the visit to a new hospital setting with a 30 year tradition of integrative paediatric psychotherapy will stimulate you to reconsider many patterns in your daily work routine from a new perspective.

For whom

The courses are composed for advanced and senior specialists, professionals in training as well as students of studies with a developmental approach (Medical school, Psychology, Social work, Early Intervention, Speech and Language Pathology, Occupational therapy, Physio- and movement therapy, music therapy, art therapy) as well as any advanced professionals in responsible positions dealing with infants and very young children and their families.

In this respect we like to attract beginners, intermediate as well as advanced trainees. The transgenerational setting within the course has proven to be very useful for exchanging views and discussing diagnostic issues and therapeutic intervention techniques as well as case presentations and video analysis. We present and use the DC 0-3R diagnostic classification system in our hospital since it was introduced in 1994.

How long

The training courses at the psychosomatic unit can be visited for a period of 1-3 weeks. They last daily from 9 am-3 pm. It's also possible to do a clinical apprenticeship of up to 6 months. The participation of a course is concluded with a certificate and if needed an exam.
